WP3: Core Tchnology

This WP aims at providing the technology components that will be implemented in devices and tools to provide the next generation of large-scale distributed systems for batch and continuous process applications. In essence, it will implement the components identified by the WP2 architectural work. However, none of the previous projects addressed the specific challenging requirements coming with large-scale distributed systems for batch and continuous process applications, when SCADA functions have to be performed, e.g.:

  • How deep into the system can we go with SoA-based monitoring and control solutions (including addressing costs, real-time and security issues)?
  • How can monitoring and control (SCADA) services with real-time aspects be modelled, analyzed and implemented?
  • How can we manage a system with thousands of dynamic SoA-compliant devices with SCADA-functionality (in the overall system, which may be composed on many different control loops, each one with several devices)?

In the WP2 architecture study, the components required for devices and tools will be identified and specified (including their targeted properties in terms of cost, real-time performance, dynamicity and security). In parallel with this WP2 specification task, without waiting for its final results, critical points will be investigated, in order that major choices can be finalized at the end of the project first year, together with the availability of a very first implementation of some of the components.
